INTERIM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JOB DESCRIPTION
FOR FIXED TERM: JULY 2026 - JUNE 2027
Organization: Boise Gay Men’s Chorus, under the auspice of Boise Choruses
Supervised by: Board of Directors
Purpose of Position: Temporary (.25 FTE) salaried position providing artistic leadership and program continuity during a transitional period. Flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
Time Commitment: Approximately 5 hours per week
Location: Boise, Idaho
Chorus Mission: Opening hearts and minds through music.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Interim Artistic Director is responsible for maintaining the artistic quality, rehearsal structure, and performance execution of the Boise Gay Men’s Chorus during the 2026–2027 season.
This is a fixed-term position (July 2026 – June 2027). The Chorus’s current Artistic Director is expected to return at the conclusion of this period, and the Interim Artistic Director will play a key role in ensuring a smooth and successful transition.
This opportunity may be especially well-suited for conductors between roles, exploring new communities, or seeking a meaningful short-term artistic engagement.
THE INTERIM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
1. Promote the Chorus’ Mission and Community
Foster a positive, inclusive, and mission-driven environment for members.
Maintain existing community relationships and represent the Chorus as needed.
Support continuity of the Chorus culture and member experience.
2. Execute and Direct Chorus Programming (50%)
Finalize or implement the 2026–2027 season plan in collaboration with the Board (including refining any existing plans).
Submit song lists to Board of Directors at least 4 weeks prior to rehearsals.
Lead weekly rehearsals (typically Mondays 7–9pm).
Maintain consistent rehearsal structure and musical standards.
Coordinate music selection, purchase, and distribution in collaboration with the Board and AD on sabbatical.
Communicate regularly (minimum bi-weekly) to the Board Chair
Arrange for rehearsal coverage if absent.
3. Development and Finances (10%)
Work within an approved artistic budget.
Support fundraising efforts tied to performances as appropriate.
Request approval for any expenses beyond budget allowance related to chorus outreach, development, and performance.
4. Supervision of Music Staff and Volunteers (15%)
Hire and supervise accompanist(s).
Coordinate with section leaders and volunteers to support musical preparation.
Engage contract musicians and soloists as needed.
5. Board Communication and Collaboration (10%)
Attend Board meetings and provide regular reports and updates.
Work closely with the Board Chair and any transition committee.
Participate in planning conversations related to the return of the Artistic Director.
6. Outreach and Organizational Support (10%)
Work closely with Outreach Coordinator, Marketing Director & Treasurer to plan for outreach and concert production.
Collaborate with Board Chair, Vice Chair and Marketing Director to ensure appropriate and successful project outcomes.
Support scheduled performances and community engagements.
7. Transition and Documentation (5%)
Provide a brief end-of-term report with recommendations.
Support a smooth transition back to the returning Artistic Director, including knowledge transfer as needed.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
BA or advanced degree in music (choral conducting preferred) or equivalent experience
Experience with community-based choruses and diverse skill levels
Strong leadership and collaboration skills
Flexibility and adaptability in a transitional environment
Strong communication skills
Excellent organizational and project management skills.
Comfort with basic digital tools (email, documents, chorus management software - Chorus Connection, virtual rehearsal tools)
